The board of Phoenix Area’s Valley Metro has authorized the purchase of 11 S70 light rail vehicles (LRVs) from Siemens Industry and the purchase of six off-wire capable, battery propulsion streetcar vehicles from Brookville Equipment.
The Siemens’ contract is worth approximately $57.9 million and has an option of up to 67 additional S70 LRVs. The vehicles will be delivered over a seven-year period. The Brookville contract, which is worth approximately $33 million, will take place over a three-year period.
The new vehicles were purchased for anticipated growth in future ridership along the current 26-mile line, as well the opening of the Gilbert Road Extension and other extensions that are anticipated to open through 2026. The Streetcar is scheduled to start service in 2020.
Valley Metro will also be expanding the Operations and Maintenance Center to support the additional LRVs and new streetcar fleet. Expansion will include new storage tracks for LRVs and a build out of additional shop and storage facilities.
