Reading & Northern Railroad (R&N) has announced that the R&N and Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway passenger rail has seen an increase of 15 percent in ridership in 2017. The total of almost 120,000 passengers last year follows 2016 when R&N broke the 100,000 passenger mark for the second time.
The railroad stated that most of its growing ridership is due to its Reading Outer Station north of Reading, Pa., which was completed in 2017 and includes a Victorian-era switch tender’s tower, restrooms and a passenger loading platform. Rides were offered on its mainline route from the new station between Memorial Day and November in 2017, with every train sold out.
R&N also reported that the Fall Foliage rides from Port Clinton to Reading Outer Station added extra trains in 2017 and almost 6,000 passengers were recorded. The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway had ridership increase by 20 percent to nearly 100,000 people in 2017.
