VIA Rail Ridership Up 11.7 Percent in Third Quarter

VIA Rail Canada has reported that ridership increased by 11.7 percent in the 2017 third quarter when compared to the same period in 2016. Revenues for the quarter were up by 13.9 percent, and passenger revenue increased 14.8 percent compared to last year’s third quarter. The agency also announced an increase of 15 percent in miles travelled for the quarter with the total at 296 million miles.

“As Canada’s 150th anniversary year draws to a close, I am happy to report another successful quarter at VIA Rail, worthy of its own celebration,” stated Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, VIA Rail’s president and CEO. “Over the past three months, we have witnessed several impressive achievements, including our 14thconsecutive quarter of revenue growth and our 7th consecutive quarter of ridership growth — both increasing by double digits compared to last year.”

“One explanation for these exceptional results can be found in the commitment of VIA Rail employees,” added Desjardins-Siciliano. “Over the last 12 months, employee engagement has reached an all-time high of 62 percent which marks a 5 percent improvement over last year and a remarkable 16 percent improvement since 2014.”

VIA Rail has also reported record passenger revenues of close to $38 million in August 2017, making it the highest revenue month on record. Over Labour Day weekend, VIA Rail recorded double-digit growth compared to last year.
