VIA Rail Canada has reported that ridership from December 18 to January 7 totaled 308,000 passengers, a 9.7 percent increase over the same time period in 2016-2017. December 22, 2017, saw the highest number of rail passengers, with 20,700 riders.
“Our operations have been strained in recent weeks by cold spells and extreme winter storms,” said VIA Rail President and CEO Yves Desjardins-Siciliano. “Over this busy season, we have doubled our efforts to limit the impact, provide good service and bring our passengers to their destinations safely. I thank our clients for their understanding and I want to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of our front-line employees and our maintenance centers.”
Routes that had an increase in passengers over the holidays included the Québec City–Windsor Corridor with more than 291,500 passengers, up 10 percent; and the Ocean service with 7,700 passengers, an increase of 1.5 percent.
