The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the City of Raleigh will open the new Raleigh Union Station at 510 W. Martin St. in July. The station will replace the existing Amtrak station on Cabarrus Street.

The new station will feature a center platform which allows passengers to board trains on either side. The canopied platform will also accommodate longer trains. The new facility will have two dedicated tracks for trains stopping at Raleigh Union Station, removing passenger trains from the mainline tracks and allowing freight and other passenger trains to bypass the station. The 26,000-square-foot building will provide 9,200 square feet of passenger areas.

The current station is overcrowded and lacks a platform large enough to serve the longer trains that come into the station. Passenger trains stopping at the station also block the mainline railroad track when passengers are boarding.
