Kansas City Southern has received the first two of 27 locomotives it is having repowered by Electro-Motive Diesel this year.
Eleven of the units will be put into service on Kansas City Southern Railway and 16 will run on Kansas City Southern de Mexico. The 27 locomotives are being converted from about 40-year-old SD 40 and GP 40 units to SD22ECO units. The repowered locomotives result in 25 percent fuel savings, 50 percent lube oil reduction and a 70 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
