Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) has reported a decrease of 6.8 percent, or 17,198 carloads, for February 2019 rail traffic compared to February 2018. Carloads totaled 237,072. Same-railroad traffic for February 2019 was down by 1.8 percent when compared to February 2018. This excluded carloads from the company’s former Continental European intermodal business (ERS), which was sold in June 2018, and short line lease expirations in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2018.
G&W’s North American operations reported a decrease in February traffic of 4.8 percent to 121,261 carloads, primarily due to decreased coal and coke, as well as lumber and forest products traffic. Shipments were also adversely impacted by severe winter weather events that affected G&W’s Canada, Midwest and western regions.
