D.C. Metro Announces Wireless Service on Metro Lines

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Metro now has additional wireless voice and data service in the first downtown tunnel segments on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. The service is available when traveling between Metro Center and Stadium-Armory stations.

The third underground segment, between Metro Center and Potomac Avenue, provides a seamless connection to the first segment launched in December 2016 between Potomac Ave and the Stadium-Armory tunnel portal. The addition extends underground wireless coverage to 3.7 miles of tunnels in each direction on the Orange, Silver and Blue lines.

Metro and the wireless carriers ‐ AT&T, Sprint, T‐Mobile and Verizon Wireless ‐ previously installed wireless voice and data service in all underground Metro stations and introduced service on the Red Line from Glenmont Station to the Silver Spring Station tunnel portal in April.

All tunnels are projected to be covered by December 2020.
